Chapter Six: Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> of those from Our Ummah<br />

and principal. This fort came into his hands, and his method of<br />

propagating was only to invite some simpleton who could not know<br />

his right hand from his left, or was unacquainted with affairs. He<br />

would feed the man on walnuts, honey, and coriander, so that his<br />

brain would expand. <strong>The</strong>n he would recount to him the wrongs and<br />

injuries which the family of the Prophet (;i) had sustained till that<br />

got fixed in his mind. <strong>The</strong>n he would say to him. If the Azraqites<br />

and Dissidents sacrificed their lives in fighting against the Umayyads,<br />

why should you grudge your life in defence of your <strong>Imam</strong>? By this<br />

language he would leave the man fodder for the sword.<br />

Malik Shah had sent to this <strong>Ibn</strong> al-Sabal). summoning him to obedience,<br />

threatening him if he resisted, and ordering him to cease<br />

sending his followers to murder savants and princes; in answer to<br />

this message he said in the messenger's presence: <strong>The</strong> answer is<br />

what you shall see. He then said to a number of men who were<br />

standing in front of him: I wish to send you to your master on a<br />

certain business, and who will volunteer? Everyone of them was<br />

anxious to go. <strong>The</strong> Sultan's messenger supposed that he was entrusting<br />

them with a message. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>Ibn</strong> al-Sabal). pointed to a youth<br />

among them, and said to him: Kill yourself <strong>The</strong> lad drew a knife, cut<br />

his throat with it and fell down dead. <strong>The</strong>n he told another to throw<br />

himself from the fort; he did so and was smashed to pieces.<strong>The</strong>n<br />

<strong>Ibn</strong> al-Sabal:i turned to the Sultan's messenger and said: Tell him<br />

that I have with me twenty-thousand of these people whose obedience<br />

to me goes to this length. This is my answer. <strong>The</strong> messenger<br />

returned to the Sultan Malik Shah and told him what he had seen.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Sultan marvelled at this, and ceased parleying with them.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y got a number of forts into their hands; and proceeded to<br />

murder numerous princes and governors. In our history we have<br />

told strange stories about these people, and see no reason to expand<br />
