Chapter Eleven: <strong>The</strong> Devifs <strong>Deception</strong> of the $Ufis<br />

And Al-Sha'bi said: May the singer (mugham) be cursed and the<br />

one being sung to (mughana).<br />

(Umar <strong>Ibn</strong> (Abdu'l-(Aziz wrote a letter to the caretaker of his son:<br />

Let the first thing that he (my son) learns from you is the etiquette<br />

of disliking instruments of play (al-maldhz) . <strong>The</strong>y begin with Satan,<br />

and their ending is Allah's anger. I have been told <strong>by</strong> trustworthy<br />

scholars that attending sessions of music (al-ma azilj and listening to<br />

songs (al-dghdm) causes hypocrisy to grow in the hearts just as water<br />

makes grapes grow. It is better for a person to avoid such sessions<br />

than to gain this (hypocrisy) in his hearts.<br />

Al-Fuqayl <strong>Ibn</strong> (Iyaq said: Singing (al-ghind) is the ladder leading to<br />

fornication (al-zina).<br />

And al-Dal:iJ:iak said: Singing is a ruiner (mufsida) of the hearts and<br />

a bringer of Allah's wrath.<br />

And al-Yazid <strong>Ibn</strong> al-Walid said: 0 children of Umayyah! Avoid<br />

singing because it increases lusts (al-shahwa) and ruins good character.<br />

It has the same effect as alcohol. At a minimum, keep it away<br />

from women, for it incites to immorality<br />

Many worshipers and ascetics went astray because of singing. I<br />

have mentioned some examples in my book "Dhamm al-Hawd" (Condemning<br />

Lusts).<br />

As for proofs based on analysis:<br />

We have already shown how singing destroys a man's balance, and<br />

affects his reason; the explanation of this is that when a man experiences<br />

emotion, he performs acts which in the sober state he disapproves<br />

of in others, such as shaking the head, clapping the hands,<br />
