Chapter Eleven: <strong>The</strong> Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> ef the $i!fts<br />

Had these people known that raising their heads and lowering them<br />

is the same with respect to showing shyness from Allah; they would<br />

not have done so. Iblls has no other occupation than making play of<br />

the ignorant. He keeps his distance from the scholars, of whom he<br />

is greatly afraid, as they know what he is about and are on their<br />

guard against his cunning.<br />

Abu Salamah <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Abdu1l-Ra}:unan said: <strong>The</strong> Companions did not<br />

act as if they were dead. <strong>The</strong>y used to recite poems to each other at<br />

their assemblies, and narrate stories from the days of jahil[Jyah. But<br />

whenever any of them would be in a situation where they are asked<br />

to compromise on matters of their religion, he eyes would roll as if<br />

he turned mad.<br />

'Umar <strong>Ibn</strong> al-Khattab (rat/ryAl/ahu 'anhu) saw a youth walking with<br />

his head down, so he told him: "Raise your head, for humility does<br />

not go beyond what is in the heart; if anyone makes a display of<br />

more humility than is in his heart, he only exhibits hypocrisy (nifaq)<br />

added to hypocrisy.<br />

Kulayb al-JuramI told 'Abdu1l-Ral:iman <strong>Ibn</strong> al-Aswad when he saw<br />

him walking with humility very close to the wall, and he inclined his<br />

head slightly and said to him: Why do you walk keeping close to the<br />

wall? By Allah! 'Umar used to step hard on the ground when walking,<br />

and used to talk with a powerful voice.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Salaf used to conceal their condition, and their practice was<br />

to avoid hypocrisy.<br />

We have mentioned that Ayyub al-SakhtiyanI used to wear a long<br />
