Chapter Eleven: <strong>The</strong> Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> ef the $ufts<br />

reassured <strong>by</strong> other than He (seeing the destination)! So I swore that<br />

I would not enter the oasis unless I was carried in. I dug a hole for<br />

myself in the sand and concealed my body in it up to the chest. In<br />

the middle of the night the villagers heard a voice from one high<br />

saying: 'People of the oasis! Allah Most High has a friend (wait) who<br />

has confined himself in the sand, go and bring him!' So they all<br />

came to me together, brought me out, and carried me to the town.<br />

This person has gone against his human nature. It is normal for a<br />

person to feel glad when something pleasurable takes place. Nobody<br />

blames a thirsty person for feeling glad when seeing water, or<br />

a hungry person when seeing food.<br />

We seek refuge with Allah from entering on arry action not demanded l?J<br />

knowledge and sound intellect.<br />

Also, for him to put himself in a position where he was unable to<br />

perform congregational prayer was improper. How is this, a form<br />

of getting closer to Allah? This is utter ignorance.<br />

See the effect of ignorance on this man! He was indeed a man of<br />

worth; had he had some knowledge, he would have known that what<br />

he had done was a sin. In fact, nothing assists Iblis over worshipers<br />

(al-'ubbrid) and ascetics (al-zuhhrid) more than their ignorance (a/.:Jah.<br />

Abii Isl:Jaq al-Tabar! said: Ja'far al-Khuldi said: "I stood on the<br />

mountain 'Arafah fifty six times, twenty one of them were according<br />

to the madhhab!" I asked: "What does 'according to the madhhab'<br />

mean?" I was told: "He climbs to the top of the mountain and shakes<br />

his sleeves so everyone knows that he does not have any food with<br />

him. <strong>The</strong>n he says the prayer and leaves."<br />

This is against Islam, Allah said: ''And take provisions", and His Mes-<br />
