Chapter Six· Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> of those from Our Ummah<br />

Some of the Babakis still exist, it is stated that their men and<br />

women gathered once a year. <strong>The</strong>y used to turn the lights off and<br />

have relations with one another arbitrarily. <strong>The</strong>y claimed this to be<br />

a form of permissible pursuit.<br />

<strong>The</strong> fifth title was al-Muf;ammirah (•1):<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were given this title because they used to paint their clothes<br />

red during the days of Babak.<br />

<strong>The</strong> sixth was al-Qaramitah (4J.a..1__..&J1):<br />

About the origin of which the historians take two different views.<br />

One of these is that a man from the region of Khuzistan came to<br />

the arable land of Kufah, made profession of asceticism, and urged<br />

the claims to the sovereignty of a member of the Prophet's (;i)<br />

house. He lodged with a man named Karmitah so nicknamed because<br />

of the redness of his eyes; the word meaning 'sharpeyed' in<br />

Nabataean. <strong>The</strong> man was arrested <strong>by</strong> the governor of the district<br />

and imprisoned; but he left the key of the room under his head,<br />

when he went to sleep, and a slave girl who had pity on the man took<br />

the key, unlocked the room, let the man out, and returned the key to<br />

its place. When the man was sought and could not be found people's<br />

delusion about him increased. He went off to Syria, where he took<br />

the name of his host, Karmitah, which he presently abridged to<br />

Qarmat. His functions were inherited <strong>by</strong> his family and his descendants.<br />

<strong>The</strong> second opinion is that the name was given to these people<br />

after a man named I:Iamdan Qarmat, who was one of their first<br />

missionaries; a number of people were converted and were called<br />

Qaramitah or Qaramitiyyah. <strong>The</strong> man himself was of Kufah, and<br />

inclined to asceticism; meeting on a road one of the Batini missionaries,<br />

who was driving some cattle in the direction of a village he<br />

asked this driver, whom he did not know, whither he was going. <strong>The</strong><br />
