Chapter Thirteen: <strong>The</strong> Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> of Laypeople<br />

was wise and that He was the Owner. So there was no place for<br />

such objections.<br />

Section One<br />

Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> of Laypeople regarding al-Fatwa<br />

[Jurists Religious Advisory]<br />

Some laypeople think too highly of themselves, so they stop caring<br />

about going against jurists. Whenever their Fatwas go against<br />

their personal opinions, they criticise them. <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Aqil used to say:<br />

If I were to interfere in the work of a craftsman he would tell me:<br />

"You are a scholar, may Allah bless your knowledge. This craft is<br />

not your specialty." This is in spite of the fact that the craft is a form<br />

of physical work that is easy for me to learn. On the other hand,<br />

what I am involved in (Islamic knowledge) is intellectual. If I were<br />

to give him a fatwa, he would not accept.<br />

Section Two<br />

Devil's <strong>Deception</strong> of Laypeople to think that<br />

Ascetic Masters are of a Higher Class than<br />

Scholars<br />

If laypeople saw a wool coat on the most ignorant of people they<br />

would glorify him, especially if he lowers his head and humbles himself<br />

to them. <strong>The</strong>y compare him to scholars saying: "Scholars seek<br />

worldly gain, but this man ($iift) is ascetic, he does not eat fancy food<br />

and has never married." <strong>The</strong>y do not know the virtue of the scholar<br />

over that of a $iifis. By doing so, they are claiming .)iifis to go beyond<br />

the Shan"'ah of MuQammad <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Abdullah (;i).<br />

It is of Allah's bounty on such laypeople that they were not present<br />
