It is recorded in Abii Dawiid in his Sunan, in l:iadith of Abii Umamah<br />

that a man said: 0 Messenger of Allah! Give me permission to travel<br />

the earth, to which the Prophet (;I) replied: "<strong>The</strong> travelling of my<br />

community is jihad in the Cause of Allah."232<br />

Islaq <strong>Ibn</strong> Ibrahim lbn Hani' related howwhen Amad <strong>Ibn</strong> Hanbal<br />

was asked whether he pref erred the devout traveller or the man who<br />

remained in a city, he replied that travelling had no part in Islam,<br />

neither was it the practice of Prophets (al-nabryin) or righteous (alfalipin).<br />

Section One<br />

Criticizing $iijis (aimless) Travelling<br />

As for traveling alone, the Messenger (;i) forbade from doing so.<br />

A hadith going back to the great grandfather of 1Amr <strong>Ibn</strong> Shu1ayb,<br />

according to which the Prophet (;i) said: "A lonely traveller<br />

is a devil. Two travellers are two devils. Three travellers make a<br />

caravan."233<br />

Travelling at Night.<br />
