4. Discussion<br />

Both <strong>in</strong> other bulbous plants and <strong>for</strong> Ixia, the liquid culture seems to be<br />

particularly promis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> the scale-up of mass-production of healthy and<br />

virus-free plants. In fact, the presence of Fusarium oxisporum and Bean<br />

Yellow Mosaic Virus <strong>in</strong> the propagated material is a serius bottle neck <strong>for</strong><br />

the exploitation of the commercial importance of this ornamental plant (De<br />

Hertogh and Le Nard, 1993). The addition of ANC <strong>in</strong> the cultures seems to<br />

<strong>in</strong>hibit biomass proliferation but also seems to promote differentiation as<br />

reported also by Chen and Ziv (2001) <strong>in</strong> Narcissus. In Ixia, the calli<br />

histological analysis and the behaviour of the neo<strong>for</strong>med propagules <strong>in</strong>dicate<br />

the activation of the embryogenetic pathway <strong>in</strong> the presence of ANC.<br />
