High-intensity exercises may compromise the immune response as revealed mainly by upper respiratory tract infections. This effect may<br />

be related to the decrease in secretory immunoglobulin A in the upper airway mucosa and/or changes in the pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> systemic cytokines<br />

as well as local cytokines <strong>of</strong> the upper respiratory tract. Extract <strong>of</strong> Pelargonium sidoides (EPs® 7630) is currently used to treat infections<br />

that affect the upper airways. The aim <strong>of</strong> the present study was to evaluate the action <strong>of</strong> EPs® 7630 extract on the immune response<br />

<strong>of</strong> athletes submitted to an intense running session by analyzing the production <strong>of</strong> immunoglobulin A in their saliva and <strong>of</strong> cytokines<br />

both locally and systemically, using a placebo as control. The results show that secretory immunoglobulin A levels were increased<br />

significantly in EPs® 7630 extract group [213(129.2-1436) ug/mL] in relation <strong>of</strong> placebo group [41.16 (16.06-85.28) ug/mL] (p
