for units built in the period 1946—51. In the
smallest localities (5 000—10 000 inhabitants), in
which the rents are lowest, the average rent for
the older housing units lies 38 per cent lower than
in Stockholm, but that for the newer units is only
22 per cent. It may thus be stated that the differences
in the rent level between different localities
are apparently tending to become smaller.

Private consumption in 1952. A comparison is
drawn hero between the data compiled by the
Social Welfare Board and those of the Economic
Research Institute on the size of private consumption
in 1952. The data, are obtained through two
entirely different methods: the Social Welfare
Board's calculation is based on the enquiry into
the cost of living in 1952, while the Economic
Research Institute makes its compilation on the
basis of, inter alia, statistics of production, sales
and commodity stocks.
The different data tally well as far as the sum
totals of consumption are concerned and also in
the case of several individual items, such as food,
rent, fuel and light and some miscellaneous, but less

well in the case of other individual items, e. g.
spirits and wine, tobacco, and yard goods. Page 152.
The cost-of-living index and the wholesale price
index — o comparison. This article deals with tho
difference in mobility that has been observable
in the wholesale price and cost-of-living indices
since 1950. Page 157.
The housing market situation in the autumn of
1953. An account is given of an enquiry into the
housing shortage and of special investigations
into the queues of persons applying to the houäe
agents for dwellings.
The number shown in the statistics of persons
without any home of their own who are looking
for a dwelling and live in the same municipality
as that in which they are seeking accommodation
amounts to 97 000. The housing shortage is, however,
unevenly distributed geographically. It is
worst in the big cities, where tho shortage has
increased, whereas the conditions have improved
in the smallest communities. Page 162.
The Social Welfare Board's general consumer
price index (1935 = 100) rose from 223.9 in December
1953 to 224.4 in January 1954. Page 187.
