Social security in an age of pension». The British
system of social security, which was estoblished in
ID4H, is now bring overhauled. Government inquiries
ure licing conducted into the insurance
system's way of functioning and into the general
problems associated with old-age pension» and
providing occupation for elderly persons.
Professor Richard M. Titmuss discusses in his
article the background of this revision of social
policy and surveys the more important problems
of social security now under discussion. Page 343.
Status and Social Uruup. In this urticle Professor
Gunnar lloalt deals with some of the various
methods of "stratifying" the people in a community,
lie writes, inter alio, that far too much bias
The Issue in Brief
has been attached to the old term Social Class in
Sweden. The term Social Group offers a better line
of demarcation, but even that is beginning to be
treated with some bias. Presumably it is in process
of being quietly ousted by the terms Social Stratum
and Social Stratification. Professor Boalt
critically examines the ideas of some American
sociologists such as Kaufman, Centers and Warner,
and also the Swedish method of determining social
groups such as that employed by the Central Statistical
Bureau in its election statistics. Page 358.
