Wages of workers in omnibus and cartage businesses
during t'ie third quarter of 1953. The
.Social Welfare Board has carried out a special
investigation to throw light upon this question.
According to the investigation, which includes
hoth public and private businesses, the average
hourly wage (excluding overtime payments and
payments for awkward working conditions) was
for lorry drivers 3.26 Kr. and for omnibus
drivers 3.27 Kr. In cartage businesses the
average hourly wage was for the whole country
somewhat higher in private businesses (3.27 Kr.)
than in public businesses (3.20 Kr.). In omnibus
businesses the average hourly wage was for the
whole country inconsiderably higher in public
businesses (3.29 Kr.) than in private businesses
(3.24 Kr.). Page 296.
The summary of child contributions paid in
1953 shows that these were paid by a net sum of
about 318 million Kr. which, in a round figure,
means that 1 780 000 children received public
contributions during the year. Page 313.
The cost-of-living index for March 1954 rose in
the 1935 year's series, without direct taxes and
social advantages, to 214 (from 212 in December
1953), which represents a rise of 0.9 °0. In the

1914 series the index rose from 327 in December
1953 to 330 in March 1954.
The ri.>e does not express any general price
increase tendency but should be entirely userihed
to price increases for individual goods and services,
chiefly coffee and trade union contingents.
Index for direct taxation and social advantages
rose in March 1934 to 226 in the 1933 year's
series (from 224 in December 1933) and to 333
in the 1914 vear's scries (from 350 in December

The Social Welfare Board's gem ral consumer
price index (1935 =- 100) rose from 224.6 in February
to 225.6 in March 1954, which represents a
rise of 0.4 %. Page 318.

of the article in the preceding issue concerning
the activities of the temperance committees.
The persons who come under paragraph 1 of
the Temperance Law are analysed in respect
of sex, age, status, nnme of informer, indication
applicable and the various steps taken to deal
with inebriates. There are no essential differences
