Bevölkerungsmehrheit gestellt. Andererseits bot sich die Stadt - wie ein Blick auf die
Landkarte beweist - aufgrund der Verkehrsanbindung sowie des Geländes (südlich
der Save eignete sich das Gelände für Panzeroperationen größeren Umfangs im
Gegensatz zu anderen bosnischen Regionen gut) und der Notwendigkeit der
Sicherstellung eines Korridors von Serbien in die kroatische Krajina als logistisches
HQ an.
Während des Krieges gegen die kroatische Nationalgarde wurden mehrere serbische
Frontabschnitte bereits von Bosnien aus geführt, während die serbischen Verbände
dort bereits in der Endphase des Feldzuges in Kroatien kriegsbereit disloziert und
aufgefüllt wurden: “The Dubrovnik operations of the JNA were organized from
Trebinje and Nevesinje, the eastern Hercegovinian capital, while Banja Luka, the
capital of Bosansko Krajina, was the JNA headquarters for the western Slavonian
front.” 122 “Much of the armament evacuated by the Federal army from its bases in
Slovenia and Croatia was now in Bosnia - ready fule for the tinderbox.” 123
Nicht nur wurden Einheiten aus Serbien nach Kroatien verlegt und die Operationen
von Bosnien-Herzegowina aus geführt, auch wurden frische Reservisten-Verbände
aus Montengro zugeführt. Die montenegrinische Führung legte dabei Wert darauf,
diese in Nähe zur eigegen Republik einzusetzen. “The Montegrinian leadership
persuaded the JNA authorities (1991, Anm.) to reduce the number of reservists being
deployed in the north (Kroatien, Anm) and instead agreed to allow them to be used to
push the front through Konavle to Dubrovnik. This was a brilliant tactical switch -
deeply cynical, but a master stroke none the less. The Croat resistance in Konavle
was virtually non-existent. The Montenegrin reservists were sent up both from
Herzeg-Novi and across from Trebinje in eastern Hercegovina, which lies twenty
miles east of Dubrovnik as the land rises sharply. Most of these reservists were
mobilized in Niksic, a miserable industrial wasteland in northern Montenegro, and
fabled as one of the most primitive and violent towns in Yugoslavia. The Montenegrin
reservists sliced through Croatia’s defences with the sharpness of newly-tempered
steel. It was a pushover and the rewards were substantial.” 124
