Stadshaven Rotterdam
Summary of the presentation of marco den Heijer
Department of Urban planning Rotterdam
12
The two partners involved in the project – the
City of Rotterdam and the Rotterdam Port
Authority – decided the redevelopment of the
“cityport” area. The area (1.600 ha) is located
outside the dikes, within the riverdelta. The port
economy is still active, face to face with the city.
The building of the “Maasvlakte 2” has brought
new dynamics to the city. The main goal for this
development is to strengthen the economy of the
port, city, region and Randstad Holland. In order
to realize the project, the “Project Stadshavens
Rotterdam” was founded by the City of Rotterdam
and Rotterdam Port Authority. In 2006, the
main development strategy was approved by the
City Council and Rotterdam Port Authority. In
2007 the “Implementation Program 2007 – 2010”
was formulated. In the same year, the project
became part of the National Program “Randstad
urgent”.
There are four main areas to be developed:
• Eem- and Waalhaven
• RDM-Wharf
• Rijn- and Maashaven
• Merwe- and Vierhaven
In the district Rijn- and Maashaven an urban
intensification with 3.000 – 5.000
houses, partly in the harbours, is planned, with
space for living, working and leisure time activities.
For the district Waalhaven – Waalhaven East, a
maritime service-economy with ca. 8.000 new
jobs is to be established. The main aim is to
create an attractive urban space for port and
city, directly connected to the highway as well as
to public transport. The Eemhaven shall be developed
as Shortseaport.
The RDM-Wharf is planned to become a research,
design and manufacturing area, including a high
school in old RDM-buildings.
A new mixed-use area with housing, port and new
economy is to be developed in the Merween Vierhaven
district. Between 2020 and 2030 5.000
new houses shall be built. New economy shall be
mixed with traditional use.
