Within the port, there is the Education & Infor-
mation Centre, which is sponsored by the port
community and which offers for school kids tailor
made excursions to port companies.
The project REVIT (revitalisation of the labour
market for the port) aims to solve the problem
for some of the youngsters without a qualification.
Every year, a group of these youngsters is
educated at the Shipping and Transport College
(STC) and receives on-the-job-training with stevedoring
companies in the port. After that year,
students can move to a job in the port or to a
regular education programme at the STC (for
example for straddle carrier driver or crane operator,
but also in administration jobs).
Another good practice is the development of previously
mentioned RDM site into the Research,
Design and Manufacturing Campus. Within this
historical décor of maritime industries of more
than hundred years ago, a new Campus will arise.
Here, the Albeda College, Rotterdam University
of Applied sciences, and several businesses and
creative industries are working together on special
training programmes and practices. At this
moment the Port of Rotterdam, together with all
parties involved, is restructuring the whole area
and the giant warehouses.
3. The Attractive port:
working on port’s image quality
Another profile of the Port Vision 2020 is the
Attractive Port. The appearance of the outdoor
spaces and the way in which such space is perceived
is important not only for cities, but also
for a world port such as Rotterdam.
Virtually every foreign visitor who calls in at the
port is astonished by its organised appearance,
the robust infrastructure, the green spaces and
the way in which the port is embedded in its
environment. However, the average resident of
Rotterdam will not experience this beauty. As
described earlier, the port has gradually been
making its way towards the North Sea.
The dividing physical line between port and city
is a dynamic one. In the areas around this line,
things are nearly always in a bad way. And despite
of some beautiful views, if you travel a little
further into the port and find yourself on a windy
day in the Maasvlakte distribution park; who on
earth would want to work here?
As mentioned before, the port does not really
feature among graduates and secondary school
leavers. Portrelated education, research programs
and work-study places can provide a
remedy for this. But the prospect of working on
a soulless industrial estate, which is far away and
inaccessible to boot, immediately dampens any
enthusiasm.
In short: the port can do much more to improve
its image and spatial quality. But how? This was
the question that the Port Authority put in 2006
to six design firms. After a very creative, open
and debating process, the design firms presented
their answers at the Netherlands Architecture
Institute (NAi). If you put famous Dutch designoffices
like West 8, Mecanoo, MVRDV, Ronald
Rietveld, Maxwan and H+N+S to work, you know
for sure that, as well as quality, you will get a
highly individual answer.
However, with the answers, the assignment
proved to be more complicated than initially
was been thought. But more exciting, too. The
outcomes and the discussions with the designers
confirmed that the question is justified. There
are so many opportunities, but at the same time
the conclusion is that the Port of Rotterdam Authority
(and its partners) will need to take a longterm
view on the quality of space.
The ambition has become more clearly defined
for the Port of Rotterdam authority. It has at any
rate to pursue the following avenues, highlighting
cooperation with other administrators and the
business sector:
• A more consistent policy for constructing
and building (architecture), use of colour
(white, silver, grey) and materials. White,
silver and grey stand for clean, innovative,
high tech;
