be compatible with the lower capacity facility and ordered with the lower capacity<br />

facility. This service is available as defined in NECA 4.<br />

5.5.2 Bell<strong>South</strong> shall make available the following channelization systems and interfaces:<br />

5.5.2.1 DS1 Channelization System: channelizes a DS1 signal into a maximum of twentyfour<br />

(24) DS0s. The following Central Office Channel Interfaces (COCI) are<br />

available: Voice Grade, Digital Data and ISDN.<br />

5.5.2.2 DS3 Channelization System: channelizes a DS3 signal into a maximum of twentyeight<br />

(28) DS1s. A DS1 COCI is available with this system.<br />

5.5.2.3 STS-1 Channelization System: channelizes a STS-1 signal into a maximum of<br />

twenty-eight (28) DS1s. A DS1 COCI is available with this system.<br />

5.5.2.4 AMI and B8ZS line coding with either Super Frame (SF) and Extended Super<br />

Frame (ESF) framing formats will be supported as an optional feature on DS1<br />

facilities.<br />

5.5.3 Technical Requirements<br />

5.5.3.1 In order to assure proper operation with Bell<strong>South</strong> provided central office<br />

multiplexing functionality, <strong>TC</strong> SYSTEMS’s channelization equipment must adhere<br />

strictly to form and protocol standards. <strong>TC</strong> SYSTEMS must also adhere to such<br />

applicable industry standards for the multiplex channel bank, for voice frequency<br />

encoding, for various signaling schemes, and for sub rate digital access.<br />

5.6 Dark Fiber Transport<br />

5.6.1 Unused Transmission Media includes existing Loops and interoffice transmission<br />

facilities both lit and unlit, defined as set forth in FCC Rule 51.319 that is not used<br />

for existing service or maintenance of existing service or defective or in the case of<br />

dark fiber as outlined in paragraph 5.6.2. Except as set forth in Section 5.6.3<br />

below, Bell<strong>South</strong> shall not be required to provide access to Dark Fiber Transport<br />

Entrance Facilities pursuant to this Agreement.<br />

5.6.2 Dark Fiber Transport is strands of optical fiber existing in aerial or underground<br />

structure. Bell<strong>South</strong> will not provide line terminating elements, regeneration or<br />

other electronics necessary for <strong>TC</strong> SYSTEMS to utilize Dark Fiber Transport. If<br />

the requested fiber section has any intervening (i.e., lightwave repeater<br />

(regenerator or optical amplifier)) equipment interspliced to it Bell<strong>South</strong> will<br />
