11.2.1.4 Contractor Study<br />

The Contractor study 68 (see Appendix F) was undertaken to enhance both the development of<br />

the Companies’ <strong>EEC</strong> Efficiency Partners program and the LiveSmart BC program. This study<br />

was conducted in partnership with BC Hydro, <strong>FortisBC</strong> Inc., and the Ministry of Energy and<br />

Mines to identify the ideal communication channels for reaching contractors in BC, and to<br />

determine preferences regarding incentives and options in the Efficiency Partners program and<br />

the LiveSmart BC program. The study as a whole was budgeted at $40,000, with <strong>FortisBC</strong><br />

Energy Inc. contributing $18,000, BC Hydro contributing $18,000, and <strong>FortisBC</strong> Inc. contributing<br />

$4,000. The specific objectives for this study fall into three main areas:<br />

• To measure the level of awareness and understanding of Heating, Ventilating, and Air-<br />

Conditioning (“HVAC”) contractors about energy efficiency (“EE”) programs;<br />

• Identify real and perceived barriers to promotion and participation in EE programs by<br />

contractors; and<br />

• Determine the major challenges contractors have had in using the LiveSmart BC and<br />

other utility-led incentive programs.<br />

<strong>EEC</strong> / LiveSmart BC incentive programs:<br />

• To identify incentives and/or educational programs that will encourage contractors and<br />

tradespeople to participate in efficiency or utility-partner programs; and<br />

• Use views and feedback from industry professionals for program development.<br />

Communication channels:<br />

To gain insights around energy efficiency program<br />

awareness, preferred communication methods, and<br />

training needs.<br />

Examines available technologies and determines their<br />

conservation potential.<br />
