Oliver Kunkel nazywa siebie rzeźbiarzem, ale jego twórczość
nie ogranicza się do jednego medium. Zajmując się sztuką konceptualną,
artysta kreuje obiekty, instalacje, filmy wideo oraz druki, posługując
się różnymi technikami i materiałami. Od 2001 roku głównymi tematami
jego prac stały się: Nauka/Rozrywka/Środowisko i Przestrzeń/Tworzenie
mitów/Biologia i Bionika/Zachowanie/Rozpowszechnianie informacji
(np. wiadomości różnymi kanałami).
W ten sposób Kunkel tworzy prace, które są kompleksowe i rozpościerają
się zarówno w przestrzeni prawdziwej, jak i wirtualnej. Zadając pytanie,
ich widzowie powinni odnajdywać równocześnie na nie odpowiedź.
Oliver Kunkel studiował w Szkole Sztuki i Mediów w Kolonii, uczęszczając
na zajęcia Marcela Odenbacha i Petera Zimmermanna oraz w Akademii
Sztuki w Düsseldorfie w studiu Rosemarie Trockel.

Born in 1976, Frankfurt/Mein, Germany. Lives and works in Cologne, Germany
Oliver Kunkel defines himself as a sculptor, but isn´t restricted on a certain medium.
By his conceptual work he develops objects, installations, videos and prints using
different techniques and materials.
Since 2001 main themes of his work are: Science / Entertainment / Environments
and Space / Creation of myths / Biology and Bionics / Behaviour / Dissemination
of information (e.g. by news through every channel).
In this manner Kunkel creates works that are contently complex and spread out
in a real as well as virtual space. So their viewers should ask questions and find
answers at the same time.
Oliver Kunkel was a student at the Media Art School, Cologne, at Marcel
Odenbach, Peter Zimmermann and at the Art Academy Düsseldorf in the class
of Rosemarie Trockel.

Atmosfera kliniki, całkowicie aseptyczna poza ekskrementami gołębi.
Na środku pomieszczenia znajduje się reprodukcja anteny telefonu komórkowego
odbierająca mikrofale, w każdym rogu głośnik – konwerter odtwarzający dźwięk
w systemie dolby stereo. Jeden został zdominowany przez Shepherd-Tone
(Ton Pasterski): dźwięk tworzący iluzję ciągłego narastania, po kilku minutach
dręczącego hałasu – nie ma punktu kulminacyjnego. Czy to męczące?
Kto nadaje, a kto odbiera? Plik dźwiękowy jest połączony z 45-minutowym szeptanym
tekstem. Pozostałe ścieżki dźwiękowe stanowią sinusoidę wysokich dźwięków pomiędzy
63 a 100 megaherców o bardzo małej częstotliwości, niezwykle niemiłych dla ludzkiego
zmysłu słuchu. Szeptany tekst wzięty z internetu wygłasza teorię o domniemanej historii
dziejącej się w Wielkiej Brytanii podczas ery Margaret Thatcher. Uważano wtedy, że rząd
wysyłał mikrofale przez maszty radiowe do społecznie upośledzonych miejskich dzielnic,
aby zmniejszyć rozruchy, nie pytając obywateli o zgodę. Fale te miały zapobiegać
agresji i wpływać na ludzką psychikę. Automatyczny śmiech nagrany na ścieżce stanowi
komentarz do tej teorii. Cały czas jednak istnieje niepewność, co do prawdziwości
lub fałszu tej historii. Tytuł pracy Sleeping Beauty Syndrome I (Syndrom Śpiącej Królewny
I) odnosi się do kryptonimu projektu wojskowego stworzonego przez rząd USA podczas
rządów Reagana, kiedy badano możliwości systemu broni opartego na mikrofalach,
który został czasowo wdrożony w Iraku.
A clinical atmosphere, totally aseptic except for the excrement of the doves.
In the center of the room is a reproduction of a mobilephone microwave antenna,
in every corner a reconverted speaker playing a dolby-surround sound.
That one is dominated by a Shepherd-Tone: a sound that produces an illusion
of permanent swelling, aer a few minutes a noise of haunting effection because
there is no releasing climax. Is it a trial? Who transmits and who receives? That soundfile
is underlaid with a whispered text of 45 minutes. The remained tracks are sine curves
of high-pitched and really low-frequented tones between 63 and 100 megahertz,
extremely unpleasing for the human sense of hearing. The whispered text taken from
the internet expresses a theory about a supposed incident in Great Britain while the era
of Thatcher: the government is reported to have sent microwaves, by radio masts
to socially disadvantaged, urban areas in order to depress riots, unbeknown to the
population. Those waves shall prevent aggression and have an effect on the human
psyche. The automatic laughing on the track comments on the theory. But: there is still
an uncertainty about right or wrong information. The title of the piece Sleeping Beauty
Syndrome I refers to the codename of a military project established by the US government
during the era of Reagan when a system of weapons working with microwaves,
temporarily adopted in Iraq, was investigated.
