Lives and works in Tel-Aviv, Israel. Shahar Marcus is an interdisciplinary artist who works primarily in video, performance and sculpture. Marcus works oen with organic, perishable materials, such as dough, bread, orange juice and ice, in relation to his own body. His relationship to his materials examine the position and role of his body as both human and creator, and his choice of perishables likewise highlights the nature of art and life. BREAD AND BUNKER (CHLEB I BUNKIER) to instalacja wideo i performans, stworzona przy użyciu 1500 bochenków chleba i pięciu prac wideo. Artysta będzie zbierał bochenki jeden po drugim, budując z nich wysoką na 120 cm barykadę, którą otoczy całe wnętrze galerii. Widzowie wchodzą do galerii i znajdują się wewnątrz bunkra. Ochrona i strach, wnętrze i to, co na zewnątrz, samotność i braterstwo, wszystko to postrzegane jest równocześnie. Prace wideo umieszczone są wewnątrz ścian z chleba, a każda z nich to opowieść i przygoda realizowana przez Marcusa w poprzednim bunkrze z chleba, stworzonym w Tel Awiwie specjalnie z myślą o tym berlińskim projekcie: dekoracja generała medalami, które w rzeczywistości są kolorowymi ciasteczkami; domowa fabryka karabinów i pistoletów z ciasta; Marcus walczący z kilogramami surowego ciasta. BREAD AND BUNKER w ironiczny sposób ilustruje przypadkowość i dramatyczne paralele żywności i wojny: „Ta wystawa odnosi się do wojny jako ludzkiego paliwa, które jest przez ludzkość serwowane ponownie w nieprzerwanym kanibalistycznym kręgu drapieżcy i ofiary”. W przeciwieństwie do prawdziwych bunkrów „ten, który zbuduję będzie tymczasowy i nietrwały, w odróżnieniu od bunkrów betonowych, które pozostają jako pomniki na długo po tym, jak zakończą się walki”. (Marcus) BREAD AND BUNKER is a video installation and performance made from 1.500 loaves of bread and five video works. One by one the artist will collect the bread forming a 1.20 cm high barricade, surrounding the whole interior of the gallery. The audience enters the gallery and finds themselves inside a bunker. Protection and fear, interior and exterior, loneliness and comradeship are simultaneously perceived. The video works are inserted along the bread walls, each a story and adventure performed by Marcus in a previous bread bunker made in Tel Aviv especially for this Berlin project: the decoration of a military general with medals, which are in reality colorful cookies; the homemade manufacture of rifles and pistols made of dough; Marcus battling with a kilos of dough. BREAD AND BUNKER ironically exhibits the contingent and dramatic parallel of nourishment and war: “The exhibition refers to war as the human fuel and the humanity feeds it back in an endless cannibal circle of predator and prey” (Marcus). On the contrary of the real bunkers: “the bunker that I will build will be temporary and perishable, as opposed to the concrete bunkers that stay as ).monuments long aer the fights are over”.
