But is there a change insight? Do we look for alternatives?
Is there something we used to call utopia or is this term disqualified
due to the failing of the socialist system in the twentieth Century?
Lecz czy zaszła jakaś wewnętrzna zmiana? Czy szukamy alternatyw?
Czy istnieje coś, co nazywano kiedyś utopią lub czy termin ten został
zdyskwalifikowany z powodu upadku systemu socjalistycznego w XX wieku?
A Biennial should consider the most recent problems and tendencies
being reflected in the arts and should take the risk to select artists
questioning the present in order to imagine the future. A Biennial
therefore should be vibrant and as close as possible to contemporary
discourses and debates and should not follow what’s canonized in the
museums or what is currently hyped at the art market.
Art does not have to serve national or religious guidelines and can
be an appropriate mean to make visible in a radical and critical way
dimensions of society and even making available utopian ideas.
All twelve positions I chose for my curatorial concept have been
contributed by 17 artists working as individuals or as duos. They focus
in a critical way but with different aesthetic means on various aspects
of a reality.
Biennale powinno zająć się refleksją nad bieżącymi problemami
i tendencjami odzwierciedlonymi przez sztukę, powinno także podjąć
ryzyko wyboru artystów kwestionujących teraźniejszość po to,
aby stworzyć przyszłość. Dlatego też Biennale powinno tętnić życiem
i być tak blisko współczesnych dyskursów i dyskusji, jak to tylko możliwe,
nie powinno natomiast ulegać temu, co kanonizowane przez muzea
lub cieszące się wzięciem na rynku sztuki. Sztuka nie musi kierować
się narodowym czy religijnym wskazówkami i może być odpowiednim
środkiem do wizualizowania w krytyczny i radykalny sposób wszelkich
wymiarów społecznych, a nawet zmieniania utopijnych idei w możliwe.
12 prac, które wybrałem w ramach koncepcji kuratorskiej, stworzyło
17 artystów pracujących indywidualnie lub w parach. Prace te, mimo
że odnoszą się do rożnych aspektów rzeczywistości i posługują się
odmiennymi środkami artystycznymi, łączy krytyczna perspektywa.
