i Azji. Artysta jest niezwykle wszechstronnie wykształcony,
posiada stopnie naukowe w zakresie sztuk pięknych
i psychologii (Uniwersytet Waterloo, Kanada),
nauk inżynieryjnych (Northern Alberta Institute
of Technology, Kanada) oraz tytuł magistra sztuk wizualnych
(Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA); zajmował
się także naukowo kinem na Uniwersytecie Harvarda, USA.
Artysta pracował jako profesor na wydziale sztuki i designu
(Uniwersytet Concordia w Montrealu, Kanada) oraz
Pratt Institute w Nowym Yorku, USA.

He is a Canadian artist and writer on aesthetics. Since 1986,
his video-sound installations and performances have been exhibited
at festivals and museums throughout Europe, North America
and Asia. Education: degrees in Fine Arts and Psychology (University
of Waterloo, Canada), Electronics Engineering Technology (Northern
Alberta Institute of Technology, Canada), a Masters in Visual Studies
(Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA), and he studied cinema
at Harvard University, USA. He has held full-.time professorships
in art and design at Concordia University (Montreal, Canada)
and Pratt Institute (New York City, USA).

Duża projekcja wideo ukazująca tłum zachęcający zwiedzających do mówienia z mównicy
wyposażonej w mikrofon i teleprompter wyświetlający fragmenty tekstów przemówień
historycznych i politycznych. Zgodnie z łacińską sentencją Vox Populi każdy może
zostać liderem i wypowiadać słowa wpływowych postaci polityki, takich jak Martin
Luther King Jr, John F. Kennedy oraz George W. Bush. Kiedy zwiedzający wygłasza mowę
przez mikrofon, tekst przewija się na teleprompterze, a tłum reaguje z różnego stopnia
wrogością lub aplauzem – głos gościa miesza się z okrzykami tłumu. Poziom pewności
w głosie lidera determinuje różne percepcyjne aspekty instalacji. Filozof David Hume
napisał: Nic nie zadziwia bardziej niż łatwość, z którą tłumy rządzone są przez niewielu.
A large video projection of a crowd encourages visitors to speak from a lectern equipped
with a microphone and a teleprompter that provides the text of historical, political
speeches. Within Vox Populi, anyone can adopt the role of a leader and speak the words
of influential political leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr, John F. Kennedy,
and George W. Bush. When a visitor delivers a speech through the microphone,
the text scrolls on the teleprompter, the crowd responds with varying degrees of hostility
or support, and the visitor’s speech is mixed with the crowd’s screaming.
The amount of confidence within the leader’s voice controls various perceptual
aspects of the installation. Philosopher David Hume writes, Nothing is more surprising
than the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.
