Nad długoterminowym projektem A Lighthouse for Lampedusa! (Latarnia dla
Lampedusy!) pracuję od 2007 roku, kiedy to zostałem zaproszony przez Andrea Sassi
na wystawę dispari&dispari project space w Reggio Emilia.
Od lat 90. XX w. Lampedusa – mała wyspa usytuowana przy południowo-zachodnim
brzegu Sycylii – stała się głównym miejscem na Morzu Śródziemnym, dokąd przybywają
nielegalni emigranci z Afryki i Azji. Do 2009 roku przypływało tam rocznie do 30.000
uchodźców. Wiele osób zginęło podczas niebezpiecznej wyprawy. Nieliczni, którzy
szczęśliwie dotarli do brzegów, byli często deportowani. Od 2009 roku prawie wszystkie
łodzie przechwycone przez europejską policję oraz siły zbrojne są bezpośrednio odsyłane
do Libii. Choć Twierdza Europa zamyka swoje bramy coraz bardziej efektywnie, Parlament
Europejski podczas posiedzenia wezwał władze libijskie do stworzenia krajowego systemu
zajmującego się azylantami.
I am developing the project A Lighthouse for Lampedusa! as a longterm project since 2007,
when I was invited by Andrea Sassi for a show at dispari&dispari project space in Reggio Emilia.
Since the nineties Lampedusa - a small island south-west of Sicilly – became a main
venue to stranding migrants from Africa and Asia in the Mediterranean. Until 2009 per
year up to 30.000 refugees arrived. Many people died during the dangerous crossing.
But the ones that lukily made it to the shores of Lampedusa increasingly were facing
deportations. Since 2009 almost all boats on sea get intercepted and directly sent back
to Libya by European police and armed forces. While the ‘Fortress Europe’ is closing more
and more efficiently its gates at the sitting of June 17, 2010 the European Parliament calls
on the Libyan authorities among others to establish a national asylum system.
