Antarahitañ-ca maṁ na jānanti:<br />

And when I had disappeared they did not know me (and would ask):<br />

‘Ko nu kho ayaṁ antarahito Devo vā manusso vā?’ ti<br />

‘Who is this who disappeared, a Divinity or a man?’<br />

8) Abhijānāmi kho panāhaṁ Ānanda anekasataṁ Brahmaparisaṁ upasaṅkamitvā,<br />

I know, Ānanda, that after approaching countless hundreds of assemblies of the Brahmā<br />

Divinities,<br />

tatra pi mayā sannisinnapubbañ-ceva sallapitapubbañ-ca,<br />

that there, before settling down, before conversing,<br />

sākacchā ca samāpajjitapubbā,<br />

and before entering upon discussion,<br />

tattha yādisako tesaṁ vaṇṇo hoti tādisako mayhaṁ vaṇṇo hoti,<br />

whatever their appearance was, my appearance would become,<br />

yādisako tesaṁ saro hoti tādisako mayhaṁ saro hoti,<br />

whatever their voice was, my voice would become,<br />

Dhammiyā ca kathāya sandassemi samādapemi samuttejemi sampahaṁsemi,<br />

and I instructed, roused, enthused, and cheered them with a talk about the Teaching,<br />

bhāsamānañ-ca maṁ na jānanti:<br />

and while I was speaking they did not know me (and would ask):<br />

‘Ko nu kho ayaṁ bhāsati Devo vā manusso vā?’ ti<br />

‘Who is this speaking, a Divinity or a man?’<br />

Dhammiyā ca kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā,<br />

* and having instructed, roused,<br />

samuttejetvā sampahaṁsetvā antaradhāyāmi.<br />

enthused, and cheered them with a talk about the Teaching, I disappeared.<br />

Antarahitañ-ca maṁ na jānanti:<br />

And when I had disappeared they did not know me (and would ask):<br />

‘Ko nu kho ayaṁ antarahito Devo vā manusso vā?’ ti<br />

‘Who is this who disappeared, a Divinity or a man?’<br />

Imā kho Ānanda aṭṭha parisā.<br />

These, Ānanda, are the eight assemblies.
