Atha kho Bhagavā āyasmantaṁ Ānandaṁ āmantesi:<br />
Then the Gracious One addressed venerable Ānanda, (saying):<br />
“Āyām’ Ānanda yena Hiraññavatiyā nadiyā pārimaṁ tīraṁ,<br />
* “Come Ānanda, let us approach the further shore of the Golden river,<br />
yena Kusinārā Upavattanaṁ Mallānaṁ Sālavanaṁ tenupasaṅkamissāmā.” ti<br />
to Kusinārā, and to the Mallas’ Sal Wood at Upavattana.”<br />
“Evaṁ Bhante,” ti kho āyasmā Ānando Bhagavato paccassosi.<br />
“Very well, reverend Sir,” venerable Ānanda replied to the Gracious One.<br />
Atha kho Bhagavā mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ<br />
Then the Gracious One together with a great Community of monks<br />
yena Hiraññavatiyā nadiyā pārimaṁ tīraṁ,<br />
* went to the further shore of the Golden river,<br />
yena Kusinārā Upavattanaṁ Mallānaṁ Sālavanaṁ tenupasaṅkami,<br />
to Kusinārā, and the Mallas’ Sal Wood at Upavattana,<br />
upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ Ānandaṁ āmantesi:<br />
and after going he addressed venerable Ānanda, (saying):<br />
“Iṅgha me tvaṁ Ānanda antarena<br />
* “Come, Ānanda, prepare<br />
Yamakasālānaṁ uttarasīsakaṁ mañcakaṁ paññāpehi,<br />
a couch with the head facing north between the Twin Sal Trees for me,<br />
kilantosmi Ānanda nipajjissāmī.” ti<br />
I am weary, Ānanda, and will lie down.”<br />
“Evaṁ Bhante,” ti kho āyasmā Ānando Bhagavato paṭissutvā,<br />
“Very well, reverend Sir,” said venerable Ānanda, and after replying to the Gracious<br />
One,<br />
antarena Yamakasālānaṁ uttarasīsakaṁ mañcakaṁ paññāpesi.<br />
he prepared a couch with the head facing north between the Twin Sal Trees.<br />
