The Fourth Chapter for Recitation - 156<br />
Atha kho Bhagavato, Cundassa Kammāraputtassa bhattaṁ bhuttāvissa,<br />
Then for the Gracious One, after eating Cunda the Smith’s food,<br />
kharo ābādho uppajji, lohitapakkhandikā,<br />
a painful affliction arose, bloody dysentery,<br />
pabāḷhā vedanā vattanti maraṇantikā.<br />
and strong feelings occurred, such as end in death.<br />
Tā sudaṁ Bhagavā sato sampajāno adhivāsesi avihaññamāno.<br />
There the Gracious One, mindfully, with full awareness, bore (those pains) without being<br />
troubled.<br />
Atha kho Bhagavā āyasmantaṁ Ānandaṁ āmantesi:<br />
Then the Gracious One addressed venerable Ānanda, (saying):<br />
“Āyām’ Ānanda yena Kusinārā tenupasaṅkamissāmā.” ti<br />
“Come, Ānanda, let us approach Kusinārā.”<br />
“Evaṁ Bhante,” ti kho āyasmā Ānando Bhagavato paccassosi.<br />
“Very well, reverend Sir”, venerable Ānanda replied to the Gracious One.<br />
“Cundassa bhattaṁ bhuñjitvā Kammārassā ti me sutaṁ,<br />
“Having eaten Cunda the Smith’s food, so I have heard,<br />
Ābādhaṁ samphusī Dhīro pabāḷhaṁ maraṇantikaṁ.<br />
The Firm One experienced a very strong affliction, such as ends in death.<br />
Bhuttassa ca sūkaramaddavena,<br />
* For the Teacher, who had eaten tender pork,<br />
Byādhippabāḷho udapādi Satthuno.<br />
A very strong sickness arose.<br />
Viriccamāno Bhagavā avoca:<br />
While (still) purging the Gracious One said:<br />
‘Gacchāmahaṁ Kusināraṁ nagaran’.”-ti<br />
‘I (will) go to the town of Kusinārā.’” 185<br />
185 The Commentary notes: Imā gāthāyo Saṅgītikāle saṅgītikārakehi vuttā - these verses were<br />
spoken by the recitors at the time of the (first) Council.
