The First Chapter for Recitation - 29<br />

1) “Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū saddhā bhavissanti,<br />

“For as long, monks, as the monks will have faith,<br />

vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.<br />

surely growth, monks, is to be expected for the monks, not decline. 49<br />

2) Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū hirimanā bhavissanti,<br />

For as long, monks, as the monks will have a conscientious mind,<br />

vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.<br />

surely growth, monks, is to be expected for the monks, not decline.<br />

3) Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū ottappī bhavissanti,<br />

For as long, monks, as the monks will have a sense of shame,<br />

vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.<br />

surely growth, monks, is to be expected for the monks, not decline.<br />

4) Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū bahussutā bhavissanti,<br />

For as long, monks, as the monks will be learned,<br />

vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.<br />

surely growth, monks, is to be expected for the monks, not decline. 50<br />

5) Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū āraddhaviriyā bhavissanti,<br />

For as long, monks, as the monks will be strenuous,<br />

vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.<br />

surely growth, monks, is to be expected for the monks, not decline.<br />

6) Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū upaṭṭhitassatī bhavissanti,<br />

For as long, monks, as the monks will attend to mindfulness,<br />

vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.<br />

surely growth, monks, is to be expected for the monks, not decline.<br />

7) Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū paññavanto bhavissanti,<br />

For as long, monks, as the monks will possess wisdom,<br />

vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.<br />

surely growth, monks, is to be expected for the monks, not decline.<br />

49 This and the following things which prevent decline are known as the Seven Good Qualities<br />

(Sattasaddhammā), see Saṅgītisuttaṁ (<strong>DN</strong> 33).<br />

50 The Commentary explains that learning here means specifically pariyatti (knowledge of<br />

scripture).
