The Participant’s Manual contains:<br />

♦ “Participant Handouts” <strong>for</strong> group exercises, case studies, and pre- and post-tests, as<br />

well as a participant evaluation <strong>for</strong>m. Any handouts that are to be used in class are<br />

found in this section.<br />

♦ “Content” drawn from the Trainer’s Manual that can be used as reference material by<br />

the participant. The material should be photocopied and available by the time training<br />

begins. The materials may be given out at the end of each specific learning objective<br />

or all together at the end of the course.<br />

GUIDE TO SYMBOLS<br />

References to participant handouts, transparencies, and trainer’s tools occur as both text and<br />

symbols in the “training/learning methods” section. The symbols have number designations<br />

that refer to specific objectives and the sequence within the specific objectives. Handouts,<br />

transparencies, and trainer’s tools are arranged in chronological order and correspond to the<br />

numbered symbols in the “training/learning methods” section.<br />

INFORMED CHOICE<br />

In<strong>for</strong>med choice is allowing a client to freely make a thought-out decision about family<br />

planning based on accurate, useful in<strong>for</strong>mation. Counseling provides in<strong>for</strong>mation to help the<br />

client make in<strong>for</strong>med choices.<br />

“In<strong>for</strong>med” means that:<br />

• Clients have the clear, accurate, and specific in<strong>for</strong>mation that they need to make<br />

their own <strong>reproductive</strong> <strong>health</strong> choices.<br />

• Clients understand their own needs. They have thought about their own situation, and<br />

with the help of service providers, they decide on appropriate treatment, procedures, or<br />

methods of family planning according to their own needs.<br />

“Choice” means that:<br />

• Clients have a range of family planning methods to choose from.<br />

• Clients have a choice whether and how they want to be treated.<br />
