Characteristics of youth-friendly <strong>services</strong><br />
pertain to the providers, the <strong>health</strong> facility<br />
itself, and to the program design.<br />
In order to successfully serve adolescent<br />
clients with <strong>reproductive</strong> <strong>health</strong> care,<br />
service programs must attract,<br />
adequately and com<strong>for</strong>tably meet the<br />
needs of, and retain these clients.<br />
Provider characteristics include:<br />
• Specially trained staff.<br />
• Respect <strong>for</strong> young people.<br />
• Privacy and confidentiality.<br />
• Adequate time <strong>for</strong> client/provider<br />
interaction.<br />
Health facility characteristics include:<br />

• Introduce the concept of youthfriendly<br />
<strong>services</strong> using the first 2<br />

• Ask Px to identify aspects or<br />
characteristics of a facility that could<br />
be considered “youth-friendly,” writing<br />
down all suggestions on a flipchart.<br />
• When Px have had a chance to<br />
provide their ideas, show<br />
