home during the early stages of<br />

• Review with her and her support<br />
person when to return.<br />
Active Labor<br />
• Do not leave the adolescent alone.<br />
Strong, rapid contractions can make<br />
her feel frightened.<br />
• Help her cope with her fears and<br />
discom<strong>for</strong>t. Take your cues from<br />
her—ask her what she wants that<br />
would make her feel better.<br />
• When touching her, touch her gently.<br />
Position the adolescent com<strong>for</strong>tably<br />
using pillows or rolls of linen.<br />
Encourage her to lie on her side.<br />
• Guide her with breathing techniques<br />
as her labor progresses if she did not<br />
attend preparation classes. If she and<br />
her support person attended<br />
preparation classes, remind them at<br />
the critical point which breathing<br />
technique to use. Observe whether<br />
the adolescent is holding her breath<br />
when she should be breathing, and<br />
guide her in breathing.<br />
