• The adolescent's social activity may<br />

give clues about the extent of her/his<br />

sexual activity.<br />

• Ask about family, friends, school, or<br />

work.<br />

• Provide an opening <strong>for</strong> her/him to talk<br />

about peer pressure to have sex or to<br />

use drugs.<br />

Sexual History<br />

• The main impediment to obtaining<br />

clinical in<strong>for</strong>mation about sexual<br />

behavior is the client’s<br />

embarrassment.<br />

• Stress that what you discuss will be<br />

confidential.<br />

Sexual history should cover:<br />

• If s/he dates or is in a sexual<br />

relationship.<br />

• Her/his sexual knowledge, attitudes,<br />

and behaviors. Ask what s/he knows<br />

about STIs and how to prevent them.<br />

• Reproductive goals.<br />

• Contraceptive knowledge or use<br />

(past and present).<br />

• If anyone has touched her/him<br />

sexually when s/he didn't want to be<br />

touched.<br />

• Her/his plans <strong>for</strong> sexual activity in the<br />

future.<br />
