They can:<br />
• Recognize that sexual violence exists.<br />

Provide in<strong>for</strong>mation on sexual<br />
abuse/assault in the waiting room.<br />
Display posters with messages<br />
that sexual violence is not<br />
acceptable and that it is not an<br />
adolescent’s fault if it happens.<br />
• Conduct a full history and physical<br />
exam.<br />
• Ensure treatment of any medical<br />
problems.<br />
• Screen and treat STIs or refer client<br />
<strong>for</strong> screening and treatment.<br />
• In the case of rape, offer emergency<br />
contraception if it has been less than<br />
72 hours since the assault occurred.<br />
• In the case of rape, offer a pregnancy<br />
test or refer.<br />
• Offer referral <strong>for</strong> abortion if<br />
appropriate and possible.<br />
• Gather simple <strong>for</strong>ensic evidence.<br />
• Counsel. Provide understanding and<br />
compassion.<br />
• Refer the adolescent to legal or social<br />
<strong>services</strong> that deal with sexual abuse.<br />

BRAINSTORMING AND GROUP<br />
WORK (1 HOUR, 30 MIN.)<br />
The trainer should:<br />
• Break Px into 4 groups.<br />
• Read the following scenario:<br />
K_ comes in to your clinic because<br />
she thinks she might have a STI.<br />
After talking with her, you discover<br />
that her older cousin has been <strong>for</strong>cing<br />
her to have sex.<br />
• Ask each group to brainstorm what<br />
steps they would take to make sure<br />
the client was safe and received<br />
assistance. This should include other<br />
<strong>services</strong> to which they can be<br />
referred.<br />
• Allow 10-15 minutes <strong>for</strong><br />
brainstorming.<br />
• Reconvene the large group.<br />
• Ask each group to share their<br />
conclusions.<br />
• Using the content on the left-hand<br />
side of the page, fill in any missing<br />
in<strong>for</strong>mation or correct any<br />
misunderstandings.<br />
