mechanism with which Px can<br />
assess her/his knowledge base of<br />
contraceptive methods and<br />
counseling skills.<br />
3. To enable the trainer to objectively<br />
assess Px counseling skills and<br />
knowledge of contraceptive<br />
methods using the CBT Skills<br />
Assessment Checklist.<br />

ROLE PLAY, SIMULATED SKILLS<br />
PRACTICE, AND DISCUSSION<br />
(2 HOURS, 30 MIN.)<br />
The trainer should:<br />
• Ask another trainer to assist. The<br />
two trainers should use role play to<br />
demonstrate examples of what<br />
constitutes “bad” counseling and<br />
“good” counseling.<br />
• The demonstration of a bad<br />
procedure should come first,<br />
followed by analysis and feedback.<br />
• When per<strong>for</strong>ming the good<br />
counseling role play, apply the<br />
GATHER steps in correct sequence<br />
so that Px can observe an example<br />
of how that approach should work.<br />
• Have Px use Px Handout 9.1: CBT<br />
Skills Assessment Checklist <strong>for</strong> ARH<br />
Counseling Skills.<br />

• Ask Px to analyze the demonstration<br />
and provide feedback on what was<br />
positive or negative, what was<br />
missing, and whether there was<br />
wrong or incomplete in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />
