Training/Learning Methods<br />

• Allow each group 20 minutes to work<br />

on a specific task.<br />

• Reconvene the large group.<br />

• Ask each group to report back its<br />

conclusions to the Px.<br />

• Lead a discussion (including<br />

suggested additions, ideas, and<br />

experiences).<br />

• Allow 10 minutes <strong>for</strong> each group, 30<br />

minutes total.<br />

Encouraging Trust and Rapport<br />

Increasing an adolescent’s trust in and<br />

rapport with the counselor/provider will<br />

facilitate discussion and enhance the<br />

likelihood that needs will be revealed<br />

and addressed.<br />

Important conditions <strong>for</strong> trust and rapport<br />

include:<br />

• Allowing sufficient time <strong>for</strong> the<br />

adolescent client to become<br />

com<strong>for</strong>table enough during the visit<br />

to ask questions and express<br />

concerns.<br />

• Showing an understanding of and<br />

empathy with the client’s situation<br />

and concerns.<br />

• Demonstrating sincerity and<br />

willingness to help.<br />

• Exhibiting honesty and <strong>for</strong>thrightness,<br />

including an ability to admit when one<br />

does not know the answer.<br />
