COUNSELING ADOLESCENTS ON<br />

• Listen attentively to their concerns<br />
and make non-judgmental comments.<br />
• Reassure patients about<br />
confidentiality.<br />
• Assess the client’s level of sexual<br />
activity by taking a sexual history.<br />
DISCUSSION (15 MIN.)<br />
The trainer should:<br />
• Lead a discussion on effectively<br />
counseling <strong>adolescents</strong> on<br />
prevention of pregnancy and STIs<br />
using the content on the left-hand<br />
side of the page.<br />
• Ask Px if they have any other<br />
suggestions <strong>for</strong> effective counseling.<br />
• Initiate discussion of contraception<br />
and protection from STIs. Include<br />
abstinence as a reasonable option.<br />
• Warn patients about which methods<br />
will not protect them from STIs and<br />
HIV. Recommend the use of a male<br />
or female condom <strong>for</strong> this purpose.<br />
• Give adolescent clients the<br />
opportunity to demonstrate condom<br />
use on a penis model or a pelvic<br />
model if it is a female condom.<br />
• Help clients learn to negotiate<br />
condom use.<br />
