Module 16/Unit 1
Specific Objective #4: Identify the reproductive rights of
adolescents
CONTENT
Knowledge/Attitudes/Skills
REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS OF THE
ADOLESCENT CLIENT
A right is something that an individual or
a population can legally and justly claim.
For instance, individuals can claim
equality within a population or such civil
liberties as the right to vote.
Reproductive rights are those rights
specific to personal decision-making and
behavior in the reproductive sphere,
including access to reproductive health
information, guidance from a trained
professional, and RH services.
In addition to rights established within
individual countries, major international
conventions have articulated
reproductive rights, including those that
are specific to adolescents. These
policies provide the basis for the
following adolescent rights:
• The right to good reproductive health.
• The right to decide freely and
responsibly on all aspects of one's
sexuality.
• The right to information and
education about sexual and
reproductive health so that good
decisions can be made about
relationships and having children.
How are services affected when
providers believe that adolescent
clients have no rights
• The right to own, control, and protect
one’s own body.
• The right to be free of discrimination,
