Coercion • Boyfriend wants her to get pregnant. • Boyfriend/girlfriend won't let her/him use protection. • Boyfriend makes her have sex. • May have the attitude that condoms ruin sex or are unromantic. • Family coercion to conceive. Fear • Fear of rejection by partner. • Fear of the lack of confidentiality at the place where they obtain methods. • Fear of using something new—fear of the unknown. • Fear of side effects. • Fear about the proper use of protective methods. • Fear of where to keep protective methods so that no one sees them. • Fear that something may go wrong if they start using certain methods or products too early in life. • Fear that their parents will find out they are having or planning to have Pathfinder International 84 Adolescent Curriculum

Other factors • Lack the skill and expertise to negotiate condom use. • Stopped using contraceptives because of the side effects. • Are impulsive and sexual activity is often unplanned. Even when sex is anticipated, often do not have protection available. • Believe that the suggestion of protection implies mistrust of one's partner and her/his faithfulness. • Adolescents desire conception.
