• Provide mouth care—encourage the<br />
adolescent to brush her teeth; offer<br />
mouthwash, if available; apply<br />
ointment to the lips; offer sips of cool<br />
water or ice chips; and offer or ask<br />
the support person/family to bring<br />
hard candies or a wet cloth <strong>for</strong> the<br />
adolescent to suck on.<br />
• Since labor generates heat, fan the<br />
adolescent using a washcloth, a<br />
glove package, or by raising and<br />
lowering the hem of her<br />
gown/wrapper. Cool compresses to<br />
the back of neck, axilla, or groin bring<br />
relief and calm.<br />
• Rub her back if she is experiencing<br />
pain in her back. Applications of heat<br />
or cold can also help give com<strong>for</strong>t.<br />
• Encourage the adolescent to empty<br />
her bladder frequently.<br />
• Remember that medication is a relief<br />
measure and offer it wisely.<br />
False Labor<br />
• Facilitate relaxation and/or sleep.<br />
• Provide diversions to help pass the<br />
time, e.g. light sedation, warm bath,<br />
warm shower, hot drinks (such as tea<br />
with sugar, milk, or chocolate), or<br />
have a family member or support<br />
person give the adolescent a back<br />
rub.<br />
• Encourage walking to stimulate true<br />
labor or relieve false labor.<br />
