PHYSICAL INDICATORS<br />
• Difficulty in walking or sitting<br />
• Torn, stained, or bloody<br />
underclothing<br />
• Pain, swelling, or itching in genital<br />
area<br />
• Abdominal pain<br />
• Abrasions or lacerations of the<br />
hymen, labia, perineum, posterior<br />
<strong>for</strong>chette, and breasts<br />
• Bruises, bleeding, or lacerations in<br />
external genitalia, vaginal, or anal<br />
areas<br />
• Unexplained vaginal or penile<br />
discharge<br />
• Perineal warts<br />
• Labial fusion<br />
• Oral infections (gonorrhea in the<br />
mouth)<br />
• STIs, especially HPV, HSV, and PID<br />
• Poor sphincter tone<br />
• Recurrent urinary tract infections<br />
• Pregnancy<br />
Training/Learning Methods<br />

BRAINSTORMING GAME (35 MIN.)<br />
The trainer should:<br />
• Divide the group into 2 teams.<br />
• Give each team 2 pieces of flipchart<br />
and markers.<br />
• Explain that this is a contest to see<br />
which team can come up with the<br />
most correct answers within an<br />
allotted time period.<br />
• Ask the teams to think of as many<br />
physical indicators of sexual abuse<br />
as they can and write them down on<br />
a piece of flipchart.<br />
• Allow 5 minutes <strong>for</strong> brainstorming.<br />
• Reconvene the large group.<br />
• Ask each team to present their<br />
answers on the flipchart.<br />
• Fill in any missing content from the<br />
left-hand side of the page.<br />
• Total the number of correct answers<br />
<strong>for</strong> each team.<br />
• Ask the teams to break up again and<br />
think of as many behavioral and<br />
emotional indicators of sexual abuse<br />
as they can.<br />
• Allow 5 minutes.<br />
• Reconvene the large group.<br />
• Ask each team to present their<br />
answers on the flipchart.<br />
