PHYSICAL INDICATORS
• Difficulty in walking or sitting
• Torn, stained, or bloody
underclothing
• Pain, swelling, or itching in genital
area
• Abdominal pain
• Abrasions or lacerations of the
hymen, labia, perineum, posterior
forchette, and breasts
• Bruises, bleeding, or lacerations in
external genitalia, vaginal, or anal
areas
• Unexplained vaginal or penile
discharge
• Perineal warts
• Labial fusion
• Oral infections (gonorrhea in the
mouth)
• STIs, especially HPV, HSV, and PID
• Poor sphincter tone
• Recurrent urinary tract infections
• Pregnancy
Training/Learning Methods
(Time Required)
BRAINSTORMING GAME (35 MIN.)
The trainer should:
• Divide the group into 2 teams.
• Give each team 2 pieces of flipchart
and markers.
• Explain that this is a contest to see
which team can come up with the
most correct answers within an
allotted time period.
• Ask the teams to think of as many
physical indicators of sexual abuse
as they can and write them down on
a piece of flipchart.
• Allow 5 minutes for brainstorming.
• Reconvene the large group.
• Ask each team to present their
answers on the flipchart.
• Fill in any missing content from the
left-hand side of the page.
• Total the number of correct answers
for each team.
• Ask the teams to break up again and
think of as many behavioral and
emotional indicators of sexual abuse
as they can.
• Allow 5 minutes.
• Reconvene the large group.
• Ask each team to present their
answers on the flipchart.
