When wespeak of Shevchenko’s great admiration of and intimatefamiliarity with the literatures and art of theWestern world, we must not l'ail to mention the subsequentadmiration uf his <strong>works</strong> by poets, scholarsand readers uf many nations. This interest was realizednut only through translations of Shevchenko’spoetry and prose into many languages but alsothrough tiie influence ol' the poet on the developmentoi' other literatures, predominantly the literaturesof certain Slavic nations. The scope and powerof that influence, as well as the history of the literaryrelations between Ukrainian literature and the literaturesof other nations initiated by the interest inShevchenko's poetry, arc comprehensively discussed inarticles which accompany the multi-lingual translationsof hi« <strong>works</strong> collected in Volume Fifteen ofthe full edition of his writings, published by theUkrainian Scientific Institute in Warsaw in 1938,under the editorship of Prof. Roman Smal-Stoc’kyj.Materials relating to this problem may also be foundin the fourteenth volume of that edition, publisherin 11)36, which consists of translations of Shevchenko’work into Polish. This fourteenth volume, original!}edited by Prof. Bohdan Lepkyj, was brought outsubsequent))ly as a separate publication, re-edited byProf. Pavlo Zajcev. Together, the fourteenth and fifteenthvolumes oi the Warsaw edition contain translationsof the poet’s work into twenty-two laguages.After these volumes were published in 1936 and1938, (he interest in Shevchenko increased considerablyoutside Ukraine.
