01 individual poems scattered in periodical publicationsand translations of some prcse writings anddramas between 1946 atid 1951 five volumes of Shevchenko’spoetry ill translation were brought out,including the work of such translators as Jan Turecek-Jizersky.Marie Mereanova, Zdenka Niliusova,Marie Bicblova and Marie Vovsova. The best ofthese is probably the collection Kobzar, publishedin 1953 ill Prague, which consists of eighty-fivetranslations by Zdenka Burgrova-Vovsova in collaborationwith Rudolf Hulka and the Ukrainian scholarOrest Zilyns’kyj. According to the bibliographyTaras Sevtènko v ceskc kulture (Taras Shevchenkoin Czech Culture), published in Prague in19(32 by Eva Ye 1 in ska and Orest Zilyns'kyj, 654translations of the poet’s work appeared in Czcchos'ovakiabetween 1860 and 1961.The first B u i g a r i a n translator of Shevchenko’swork was a poet and scholar of Macedonian origin,Rajlto Zhinzifov (1839-1877), who studied inUkrainian and Russian universities, and from 1859until the end of his life was a teacher in a Moscowhigh school. His first translations of the Ukrainianpoet appeared together with sonn/of his original workin 1863, in a volume Novobolgarska shirk a (A New-Bulganan Collection), Some later translators ofShevchenko in Bulgaria were Ljuben Karavclov(1835-1879), Petko Rachov Slavejkov (1827-1895),S. Drinov and Stilijan Chiliugirov. The first bookof Bulgarian translations of Shevchenko appeared in1939, curiously enough not in Bulgaria itself but- inKyiv, under the title of Izbrani proizvedenija (SelectedWorks). It contains twenty-three pieces, translatedby the Bulgarian expatriate writer Krum Kju-Ijavkov. When he returned to Bulgaria after the war,he published in Sofia in 1956 a new collection ofShevchenko’s selected <strong>works</strong>, which includes thirtythreetranslations.
