Polish-Ukrainian literary relations was the alreadymentioned fourteenth volume of the complète editionof Shevchenko’s <strong>works</strong> published by the UkraminiunScientific Institute in Warsaw in 1936, Perekladypoezij na pol’s'ku movu (Translations of the Poetryinto Polish), edited by Prof. Bohdan Lepkyj andPriif. Pavlo Zajcev. This volume includes 106 Polishtranslations, 46 of which were especially preparedfor it and published for the first time. In addition tothe older translators of Shevchenko, this publicationintroduced into the field some new and importantnames, such as the celebrated modern Polish poets K.Wierzynski, J, Iwaszkiewiez, J. iobodowski, andthe Ukrainian poet and scholar B. Lepkyj. Accordingto information published in this volume, between1800 and the end of 1935 in the Polish languagealone 95 poems of Shevchenko appeared in 167 translations.In 1955 the Poles published a volume oftranslations edited by W. Stobodnik. This bookconsists of only 86 translations, since the work ofsuch “bourgeois-nationalist” poets as B. Lepkyj, J.Lobodowski and K. Wierzynski was excluded.The year 1860 was important in the recognitionof Shevchenko’s work abroad. Not only did it bringthe Ukrainian poet to Russia and Poland but alsoto the C z e c h people. The first translator of Shevchenko’spoetry into Czech was a scholar of Slaviclanguages and literature, Josef Pervolf. Translationsby Emanuel Vavra, Jozef Kolarz, Karel Chudoba,Jan Hudeo, Frantisck Chalupa, Rudolf Pokorny andothers followed. The first book of Shevchenko translationsinto Czech was a selection by Ruzhena Jesenska,published in Prague in 1900. Between 1918and 1922 Shevchenko’s “Ivan Hus”, translated byFrantisek Tichy, came out in no less than threeeditions.
