Walk<strong>in</strong>g is the most common mode for shopp<strong>in</strong>g trips, for trips to and from school<br />

and escort trips <strong>in</strong> connection with education (table 11.5).<br />

Walk stages made as part of a longer multi-mode trip<br />

Walk stages are almost always needed <strong>in</strong> order to access public transport modes,<br />

form<strong>in</strong>g part of a longer multi-stage trip. The relative growth <strong>in</strong> walk stages reflects<br />

the prevail<strong>in</strong>g mode shift for travel more generally <strong>in</strong> <strong>London</strong> towards public<br />

transport (figure 11.30).<br />
