3.9 Modal trends: National Rail <strong>in</strong> <strong>London</strong><br />

National Rail travel has grown strongly at the national level over the past decade,<br />

with only a brief slowdown dur<strong>in</strong>g the recent recession. This pattern is reflected for<br />

travel on services def<strong>in</strong>ed by the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) as ‘<strong>London</strong> and<br />

South East’ (L&SE). Passenger kilometres and passenger journeys <strong>in</strong>creased for the<br />

fifth year <strong>in</strong> a row with <strong>in</strong>creases of 3.5 per cent <strong>in</strong> passenger kilometres and 4.3 per<br />

cent <strong>in</strong> journeys. Compar<strong>in</strong>g 2014/15 with 2008/09, there has been a 22 per cent<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> passenger kilometres and a 35 per cent <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the number of<br />

journey stages (table 3.1).<br />
