1.1 <strong>Travel</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>London</strong> report 8<br />
<strong>Travel</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>London</strong> is TfL’s annual publication that exam<strong>in</strong>es and summarises trends<br />
and developments relat<strong>in</strong>g to travel and transport <strong>in</strong> <strong>London</strong>. It provides an<br />
authoritative source of key transport statistics as well as topical evidence-based<br />
analysis, and tracks trends and progress <strong>in</strong> relation to the transport and other<br />
related strategies of the Mayor of <strong>London</strong>. It also provides an <strong>in</strong>terpretative<br />
overview and commentary that looks across the immediate impacts of TfL and its<br />
delivery partners, as well as external <strong>in</strong>fluences and trends, <strong>in</strong> shap<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
contribution of transport to the daily lives of <strong>London</strong>ers and the economic vitality<br />
of the Capital.<br />
1.2 Transport goals and outcomes sought by the Mayor’s<br />
Transport Strategy<br />
<strong>Travel</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>London</strong> reports aim to provide a comprehensive and objective evidence<br />
base for the formulation of transport policy. The current Mayor’s Transport Strategy<br />
(MTS) is built around six transport goals, summarised below, which provide a broad<br />
structure for the first part of this report.<br />
• Support<strong>in</strong>g economic development and population growth. <strong>London</strong> is grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
fast and needs a transport system that connects people to jobs and allows<br />
people, goods and services to move easily with<strong>in</strong> and through the city.<br />
• Enhanc<strong>in</strong>g the quality of life for all <strong>London</strong>ers. Transport has a bear<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
peoples’ health and wellbe<strong>in</strong>g. The strategy aims to make travel <strong>in</strong> the Capital<br />
simpler and more pleasant.<br />
• Improv<strong>in</strong>g the safety and security of all <strong>London</strong>ers. People should feel and be<br />
safe and free of fear of crime when cycl<strong>in</strong>g, walk<strong>in</strong>g, driv<strong>in</strong>g or us<strong>in</strong>g public<br />
transport.<br />
• Provid<strong>in</strong>g opportunities for all <strong>London</strong>ers. The connectivity provided by the<br />
transport network underp<strong>in</strong>s growth and economic and social vitality.<br />
• Reduc<strong>in</strong>g the contribution of transport to climate change and improv<strong>in</strong>g its<br />
resilience to the impacts of climate change. The Mayor aims to reduce<br />
<strong>London</strong>’s CO 2 emissions by 60 per cent by 2025. Clean<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>London</strong>’s<br />
transport system is a major part of this effort, as well as work<strong>in</strong>g towards<br />
improved local air quality.<br />
• Support<strong>in</strong>g the delivery of the <strong>London</strong> 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games<br />
and their legacy. We played a major role <strong>in</strong> the successful delivery of the 2012<br />
Games and are now work<strong>in</strong>g to secure their long-term legacy.<br />
These goals are set out <strong>in</strong> more specific terms <strong>in</strong> Table 1.1, which is reproduced<br />
from the MTS. The table also specifies a range of challenges and outcomes that<br />
relate to each of these goals.<br />
