4.5 Modal performance indicators: Bus
Bus service supply
The bus is one of London’s transport success stories, with service provision,
service quality and patronage increasing substantially since the start of the last
decade. Buses in London carried almost 2.4 billion people in 2014/15, and operated
489.4 million bus-kilometres (97.1 per cent of the scheduled service), a slight
deterioration on performance compared to 2013/14 (see figure 4.1). This is partly
due to a combination of industrial action by drivers, and an increase in traffic delays
caused by an increase in traffic levels and construction activity affecting the road
network. The percentage of kilometres operated is likely to continue to be
negatively impacted by increased congestion, and TfL is working with the bus
operators to mitigate the impact of this on the travelling public.
