Spatial aspects of population growth<br />

The spatial aspects of this growth, particularly <strong>in</strong> terms of the locations of new<br />

homes and workplaces, will have a key impact on where travel demand pressures<br />

will become particularly <strong>in</strong>tense, and will also affect the character of that demand.<br />

Inner <strong>London</strong> residents tend to travel more, compared to outer <strong>London</strong> residents,<br />

and are more likely to use public transport. Outer <strong>London</strong> residents tend to use<br />

cars more, and so growth here may lead to a particular <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> car travel.<br />

Concentration of future growth around <strong>London</strong>’s Opportunity and Growth Areas,<br />

for example growth associated with the Olympic Growth Boroughs <strong>in</strong> east <strong>London</strong>,<br />

should lead to growth that is more efficient – <strong>in</strong> transport terms – by offer<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

prospect of co-located homes and workplaces alongside high public transport<br />

connectivity.<br />

Look<strong>in</strong>g historically at the spatial distribution of population growth over the last<br />

decade, figure 12.10 shows that growth has been highest <strong>in</strong> the East sub region – a<br />

15 per cent <strong>in</strong>crease between 2001 and 2015. Almost 30 per cent of <strong>London</strong>’s<br />

population now live <strong>in</strong> the East sub region.<br />
