RG-15.120M --- American Joint Distribution Committee in Poland<br />

This collection contains 2,445 files of the AJDC in Warsaw, including those of the<br />

Secretary's Office and the Emigration, Individual Relief and Welfare, Tracing,<br />

Warehouses, Bookkeeping, Administration, and other departments or units. All AJDC<br />

documents are included in both <strong>English</strong> and Polish languages. Contents reflect the<br />

AJDC‘s main activities: rendering material assistance (food, medicine, clothing, <strong>to</strong>ols)<br />

and funding organizations (Central Committee of Jews in Poland, the Bund, Zionist<br />

movements, youth associations, religious societies, Hebrew schools).<br />

Provenance: Jewish His<strong>to</strong>rical Institute of Poland (JHI), Warsaw. The archives of Joint in<br />

Poland, transferred <strong>to</strong> the Jewish His<strong>to</strong>rical Institute in 1949, are far from complete. No<br />

significant documentation of the Legal or Supply Departments survives. The present<br />

reorganization of the files was completed in 2005.<br />

This collection includes extensive correspondence relating <strong>to</strong> the emigration of Manfred<br />

Löwin <strong>to</strong> the United States in 1939 and his unsuccessful attempts, with the help of his<br />

friends the Koenigsbergers, <strong>to</strong> save his family. Manfred Löwin changed his name <strong>to</strong><br />

Manfred Lovin after his emigration <strong>to</strong> the United States.<br />
