Rescue Department (Series D), 1939–1969 (bulk 1940–1950)<br />

This collection contains records relating <strong>to</strong> relief and rescue activities, the location of<br />

survivors, immigration, refugees, displaced persons, and relations with international relief<br />

organizations, including the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration and<br />

the Red Cross. Series D contains executive files and documents of the Immigration<br />

Division, the Location Service, the Child Care Division, the Committee <strong>for</strong> Overseas<br />

Relief Supplies, the Advisory Council on European Jewish Affairs, and the Rescue<br />

Department.<br />

Provenance: The records originated at the New York Office of the World Jewish<br />

Congress, which donated the material <strong>to</strong> the American Jewish Archives, Cincinnati, in<br />

1982.<br />

RG-67.013M Series F (Organization Department) of the Records of the World Jewish<br />

Congress, New York Office, 1942–1976<br />

This collection contains records of the World Jewish Congress‘ (WJC) Organization<br />

Department, whose activities included fundraising (until May 1946), producing reports<br />

on WJC activities and the situation of Jewish communities, hosting commemorations and<br />

celebrations, preparing assemblies and conferences, and maintaining relations with other<br />

Jewish organizations. Documents include mimeographed reports, <strong>for</strong>m letters, and<br />

memoranda of the Organization Department and the Executive Committee, as well as<br />

correspondence of and reports <strong>for</strong> Issac Schwartzbart, Robert S. Serebrenick, and Saul<br />

Sokal.<br />

Provenance: Originally established in Paris around 1936, the Organization Department<br />

moved <strong>to</strong> New York with the rest of the WJC headquarters. When rescue activities<br />

diminished in the late 1940s, the department inherited responsibility <strong>for</strong> the European<br />

Advisory Council. In 1960 the department moved <strong>to</strong> Geneva under Gerhart M. Riegner;<br />

some files, especially correspondence from 1958 <strong>to</strong> 1960, were sent <strong>to</strong> Switzerland and<br />

are not included in this collection. Source of acquisition is the American Jewish<br />

Archives, Cincinatti.<br />
