These articles and clippings (copies and originals) from French- and <strong>English</strong>-language<br />

periodicals relate <strong>to</strong> Klaus Barbie and his trial in Lyon, France. Among the <strong>to</strong>pics<br />

discussed are the allegations against Barbie; the testimony of Barbie‘s victims; the<br />

children of Izieu, France; and the lawyers and judges involved in the case. Also included<br />

are materials relating <strong>to</strong> the courtroom art that David Rose created during the trial.<br />

Provenance: David Rose was the courtroom artist during the Klaus Barbie trial in Lyon,<br />

France, in July 1987. The majority of these materials were collected by Rose during the<br />

trial and were later donated <strong>to</strong> the Museum.<br />

This collection contains correspondence, reports, publications, and materials on such<br />

matters as the ―school adoption‖ plan, cultural delegations <strong>to</strong> Europe and South America,<br />

essay contests, relations with UNESCO, and conferences on Yiddish- and Hebrewlanguage<br />

culture. Sub-series 1, Executive Files, 1944–1959; sub-series 2, Miscellaneous,<br />

1943–1966, 1971; and sub-series 3, Publications, 1945–1965, 1973–1974 (many in<br />

Yiddish). Provenance: The Culture Department in New York was established in March<br />

1945 <strong>to</strong> assist with reconstructing the spiritual and cultural life of <strong>Holocaust</strong> survivors;<br />

recovering cultural treasures and communal archives; and strengthening the intellectual<br />

aspect of Jewish life in the Western hemisphere and of Sephardic life in the<br />

Mediterranean area. Variations of the name appear: Education Department, Cultural<br />

Department, and Department of Culture and Education.<br />
