British Army Doc<strong>to</strong>r, 1970<br />

This collection contains a typescript of ―The Relief of Belsen Concentration Camp:<br />

Recollections & Reflections of a British Army Doc<strong>to</strong>r‖ written ca. 1970 by Major-<br />

General James Alexander Deans Johns<strong>to</strong>n, a member of the Royal Army Medical Corps<br />

during World War II who served as a senior medical officer at the liberation of the<br />

Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The typescript includes in<strong>for</strong>mation about conditions<br />

at Bergen-Belsen during both Nazi control and liberation, as well as a description of<br />

medical measures taken by the British <strong>for</strong> the benefit of the camp‘s <strong>for</strong>mer inmates.<br />

Included is a pho<strong>to</strong>copy of a pho<strong>to</strong>graph of James Johns<strong>to</strong>n and a retype of his obituary<br />

from The Daily Telegraph.<br />

Provenance: James A. D. Johns<strong>to</strong>n wrote the memoir shortly after his retirement in 1970<br />

and his widow, Enid Johns<strong>to</strong>n, donated the manuscript <strong>to</strong> the USHMM via Dr. Hadassah<br />

Rosensaft.<br />

RG-04.025 Institute <strong>for</strong> the Jewish Blind (Berlin) and the Home <strong>for</strong> the Blind in Terezin,<br />

1943–1991<br />

This collection contains original letters (accompanied by <strong>English</strong> translations) concerning<br />

Betty Falk Katz and the home <strong>for</strong> blind persons in Terezin. The letters describe the<br />

conditions <strong>for</strong> Jews in Berlin during the <strong>Holocaust</strong>, the deportation of Katz and patients<br />

of the Institute <strong>for</strong> the Jewish Blind <strong>to</strong> Terezin, and the death of Katz in Terezin. Also<br />

included are pho<strong>to</strong>graphs of Katz‘s grave in Terezin and a sketch of Katz by her son,<br />

Lothar Katz.<br />

Camps, 1945–1946<br />

The items in this collection relate <strong>to</strong> the experiences of Winfeld Rosenberg and some of<br />

his American Jewish comrades at Stalag IX-B, Bad Orb, Germany, and at Berga am<br />

Elster, a Buchenwald subcamp. Also included is some in<strong>for</strong>mation about a death march<br />

involving Rosenberg and other American prisoners of war, and their subsequent<br />

liberation by the 90th Infantry Division.
